Rewarding and recognising staff at Playford

The City of Playford’s Rewards and Recognition for Staff Program has improved job satisfaction, productivity and morale. The Program’s Recognition Awards acknowledge staff for their achievements and accomplishments throughout the year, as well as their loyalty to Council, demonstrated through years of service.

Playford is keen to ensure productive and dedicated employees receive rewards beyond those which employees would normally receive through their Award, Enterprise Agreement or Contract of Employment. When determining the most appropriate form of reward a generic system is applied, focusing on equity, consistency and fairness. The awards may or may not have a monetary value.

Kiki Magro, Manager Corporate Services and the initiator, designer and implementor of the Program, said that Council believes staff, who provide a level of service and commitment beyond that expected in their day to day role, deserve to be recognised.

“Awards are presented monthly and annually at a public function so that employees’ achievements can be publicly recognised,” she said. “Achievements of note are also acknowledged throughout the year in appropriate publications like internal newsletters and the media.”

To ensure that staff are fully credited for their excellence, Council pursues opportunities to nominate winners and nominees for State, Federal, Industry, and other external awards Managers, co workers, and customers may make nominations for recognition of outstanding service.

Kiki Magro said that not all nominations warrant recognition at the highest level, but all nominations are recorded and acknowledged by Council.

“A number of lower level nominations may be as significant as a single noteworthy contribution and will thus receive due recognition,” she said.

Nominations can be made in a number of categories to ensure all staff have the opportunity to be recognised. Nominations can also be made to acknowledge staff efforts in areas beyond those in which they normally work, including activities that contribute to improved relationships in the workplace, noteworthy activities in the community or the achievement of excellence in a certain field.

A panel comprising management and staff determines the monthly and annual winners of the awards from the nominations received.

Categories of recognition include the following.

  • Employee of the Month and Year
  • Team of the Month and Year
  • Safety Initiative of the Month and Year
  • Community Service Award
  • Excellence in their Field Award
  • Local Government Awards
  • Industry Awards.
