New library coordinator set to improve services

The Tennant Creek Public Library has had a new addition to its staff, Library Services Coordinator, Katherine Bisset. The library serves a community of around 3,500 people, comprising European and Aboriginal communities, as well as a steady flow of tourists.

It provides a variety of resources for information and leisure ranging from the Internet to photocopying to audio books and the more traditional book/video/CD collection.

The library has been involved in various community events and several community development projects. One of these was the ‘library information day’ which celebrated Library Information Week with displays, activities and a free sausage sizzle.

Other community development projects include the resumption of a mobile library service to the nearby community of Ali-Curung and a mural to be painted on the library’s windows to celebrate the diversity of the Tennant Creek community. A collaborative learning centre for the children of Tennant Creek to improve reading and mathematical skills is to begin later this year.

To ascertain public opinion and their response to the library, a community survey is being developed to determine user satisfaction with services and resources.

Katherine Bisset aims to improve and add to the non traditional resources of the library, including developing the video, CD and audio book related areas of the collection, and make the library more approachable to all sections of the community.
