Enhancing Cairns’ popular Esplanade

The Esplanade project is the result of close and ongoing consultation with the people of Cairns. Council’s aim is to create an open space and recreation area for all ages, while protecting the area’s environmental value.

The project, which encompasses a Foreshore Promenade, has been designed specifically to meet the desires and needs of the community, as well as the many visitors to Cairns. It is natural and tranquil, sympathetic to the surrounding environment and ties in well with other features close by, including Cairns’ waterfront, popular Esplanade and Cityport.

The Foreshore Promenade project will upgrade the present parkland along the Esplanade.

A joint development between the Cairns City Council and Queensland State Government, the total project value is estimated at $27.4 million. In terms of reclaimed land, the project has already been allocated $11.5 million by State Government and Council has currently budgeted $5.7 million towards it.

Construction of a boardwalk, regional playground facilities, interpretive pavilions to inform on the region’s history and environment and enhanced landscaping, are all part of the project. To date construction of the sea wall is progressing at a good pace, keeping within the project timeframe. Pile installation of the sea wall has been completed.

For further information on the Cairns Esplanade Project contact John Hawkes, Cairns City Council’s General Manager City Works and Services, on (07) 4044 3320.
