Exciting youth program

A range of initiatives and activities has been developed for the YASCA members at the 2003 conference. These include the development of an interactive reporting program, leadership skills and aspects that explore issues specific to youth relationships.

An informative line up of speakers has been arranged, including Jon Dee, who founded the Planet Ark organisation in association with friend and tennis player, Pat Cash, back in January 1992. Jon will talk about the way young people can use their position in the community to develop an idea, as well as develop relationships both between other young people and the broader community and between business and local leaders to move their ideas ahead. Jon is speaking in association with Claxton Communications.

To complement the theme of entrepreneurship, Milada Safarik, the 2003 Telstra Rural Woman of the Year will be addressing youth delegates on how she achieved her particular success. Milada has a Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology and is part of the new breed of young women now driving the aquaculture industry. She is one of the principals of Aquabait, a company involved in the development of marine worms for the fishing bait industry. Her farm is breaking new ground, both scientifically and environmentally, in the face of growing concern over the fragile intertidal ecosystem of the wild worms. Despite those who claimed a marine worm farm could not be done, seven years on, Aquabait is celebrating its first production and now selling live and preserved bait into the market.º

Other exciting activities planned include a range of interactive outdoor activities including team building activities, such as rafting, sailing, scavenger hunts at some of Orange’s more challenging outdoor venues. Movie nights and website development are also planned as a quieter contrast to some of the more active pursuits. Bushwalking and ‘Bunyip Hunting’ are some of the varied activities planned to promote team building during the ASCA Youth Conference.
