A new program launched in October aims to fulfil two of Hume City Council’s highest priorities. The Small Business Falls Prevention Program further extends Council’s commitment to a safe community. At the same time, it provides a service for local businesses to help reduce costs and adds to the incentives for establishing in Hume.
Funded by WorkCover, the Project aims to reduce injuries caused by slips, trips and falls in the workplace. The project targets small business which often find it more difficult to expend resources in this area.
“WorkCover has recognised the strong links between Local Government and small businesses within the community,” said Mayor Jack Ogilvie. “These links are ideal for communicating occupational health and safety information.”
Project Officer Paul Wilson said Council is researching how best to help small businesses in Hume in this way. “I am liaising with small business on a daily basis, providing free OH&S advice to employers and employees of small business,” he said.
On visiting each small business Paul provides health and safety posters and a brochure on the program. This contains a basic checklist highlighting hazards in the workplace which may cause slips, trip or falls.
The brochure also suggests ways in which to minimise the risks of these hazards. Free risk assessments are also available. Suggestions as to how to remedy problem areas and the value of instituting measures to reduce risks are emphasised.
