Sufficient cement to fill Mildura Rural City Council’s existing Olympic swimming pool twice over has been used to complete Stage 2 of the City’s landmark Alfred Deakin Centre. Just in time for one of the hottest summers on record, the opening of the Aquatic Centre on 21 February brings to fruition Mildura’s vision for a centrally located multi purpose complex.
The Alfred Deakin complex is already home to the City’s Visitor Information and Booking Centre, the Mildura Branch of the City’s library service and the Benetook Room, which caters for conventions, weddings, meetings, seminars and entertainment.
Just a short walk from the Mildura central business district, and close to the Murray River, Mildura Waves, as the Aquatic Centre has been named, is a showpiece of engineering. It required 2,000 cubic metres of concrete, 2,760 metric tonnes of steel and 5,500 square metres of sheeting for the roof.
The structure accommodates a 25 metre square lap pool, and a 12 by 27 metre Leisure Pool that can produce five different wave configurations for desert surfing.
It also includes a seven metre Toddlers Pool, a 12 person spa and a five person sauna. In the first month of opening, the Aquatic Centre has averaged over 2,000 patrons per day. For those who want to get fit without getting wet, there is a 244 square metre aerobics area, and a large gymnasium.
A creche is available to accommodate 30 children at a time. Wet and dry change rooms can each accommodate 200 people. Mildura Rural City Council and Sport and Recreation Victoria funded the Centre.
