Active Australia

Local Government has a crucial role to play in ensuring there are greater opportunities for communities to become more physically active. As such, Local Governments throughout Australia have been identified as key partners in an exciting new venture, Active Australia.

Active Australia is a national participation framework aimed at encouraging Australians to become healthier through increased physical activity and by maximising the benefits derived from the opportunities and facilities available to them.

A number of resources have been produced to assist councils in a very practical way with the implementation of Active Australia.

The Active Australia Local Government Resource Kit describes the Active Australia philosophy and provides ideas, case studies, contact details and promotional materials. It also outlines the process for those councils interested in joining the Active Australia Local Government network.

The Sport and Recreation in Local Government Case Study resource brings together over 150 case studies of successful sport and recreation projects and initiatives drawn from material collected from Local Government authorities and sport and recreation organisations throughout Australia over recent years.

Councils are encouraged to consider how to adapt these case studies to suit their own particular needs. Each case study has a brief description of the project and contact details to enable interested agencies to obtain further information.

Copies of both resources can be ordered from the Australian Sports Commission Publications Section on ph (02) 6214 1915 or fax (02) 6214 1995.

If your council wishes to find out more about Active Australia or the Local Government Sport and Recreation Project of the Australian Sports Commission then contact Jeff Dry on ph (08) 8416 6730 or fax (08) 8416 6782.
