Superlatives were flowing freely in praise of Logan City Council at the July launch and opening of the Mabel Park adiZone in Queensland – an Australian first.
The facility is proof positive that local councils and corporate entities can partner effectively to deliver legacies and infrastructure of enormous benefit to the whole community.
The Great Outdoor Gym Company Pty Ltd (TGO) supplied and fully installed the adiZone facilities. The concept is gaining further popularity because of a funding commitment between adidas Australia and TGO. This is in keeping with adidas Australia’s commitment to assist Australians in becoming more active and healthy. The 2012 adiZone Funding Program funds go directly towards the installation cost and assist councils in delivering a world’s best facility in their communities.
First developed by TGO and adidas in the UK for the London 2012 Olympics, the tangible success the initial UK adiZones achieved in increasing community participation in exercise soon became evident to the UK Government, which promptly committed to co-funding with councils in the UK. To date over 60 adiZones have been installed across the UK.
“The facilities work because they fit today’s urban recreational needs, they are seen as a ‘cool’ place to be by youth and the broader community and they deliver real fitness outcomes. This is a new and exciting model in delivering community infrastructure,” says Paul Hemmings, TGO Australia’s Managing Director.

The company is also in the final stages of implementing QR Codes that will be attached to all of its outdoor gym equipment allowing users a further option of managing their own fitness plan and viewing instructional videos. Additional benefits could include links to other helpful sites for general health and nutrition information.
