International stadium brings world class athletes

One of Coffs Harbour’s most valuable and best used assets is its International Sports Stadium. The venue caters for a range of sport and entertainment, providing an international standard facility. Opened in June 1994 and covering approximately 2.3 hectares, the stadium has played host to many major events.

These include rock concerts, rodeos, soccer, rugby and Australian rules football. Local sports people, which include 4,000 registered soccer players, have the benefit of a top class facility attracting a high standard of competition. Owned and operated by Council with a community based Board of Directors, the Stadium has a capacity for 20,000 spectators.

At present, seating capacity is restricted to 1,000 but plans are in the pipeline to increase this to 5,144, including corporate boxes. Six towers provide ample lighting for night use and 17 kilometres of strip drainage ensures the playing surface is always at a high standard. Currently used five days a week, this will soon be extended to six days.

In the near future, the Stadium will host an Australia versus New Zealand Under 18 Schoolboys Rugby Union match, touch football national titles and a cricket match between the NSW XI and the touring New Zealand side.

As the best facility of its type in regional NSW, the Stadium, together with all the other benefits the City offers, places Coffs Harbour in a good position to vie for pretraining in the lead up to the 2000 Olympics.
