Code of Conduct for Crow’s Nest

Following a study of the Public Sector Ethics Act 1994, Crow’s Nest Shire Council, its staff and Councillors have unanimously supported the introduction of a Code of Conduct. It covers all Shire business and activities.

Serving a population of 8,000 people and located in south east Queensland, Mayor Geoff Patch said he was proud that the entire Council had supported the introduction of a Code.

The Code, adopted on 21 November, outlines the five main ethical obligations for Councillors, staff and Council delegates – respect for the law; respect for persons; integrity; diligence; and economy and efficiency.

Mayor Patch said that while the 1994 Act does not include elected members, Councillors and staff had made specific requests that the Code apply to them.

Under the Code, Councillors and staff agree to uphold the laws of Queensland and Australia and not be party to any breaches, evasion or subversion. They also pledge to treat other members, the public and officials honestly and fairly with proper regards for their rights, duties and obligations.

Members will exercise diligence, care and attention and seek to achieve the highest standards practicable in relation to their duties and responsibilities. Finally, members shall avoid waste, abuse and extravagance in the provision or use of public resources.

The code also covers conflict of interest, bribes, gifts and benefits, use of Council resources and use of information. Copies of the Code have been made available to members of the community.
