The Victorian Government has announced renewed funding to assist councils with emergency management.
Minister for Local Government Natalie Hutchins announced the State has committed $4.56 million to the Municipal Emergency Resourcing Program (MERP) for councils in the 64 Country Fire Authority (CFA) areas for 2016-17.
The program was due to conclude on 30 June 2016.
The Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) President, Cr Bill McArthur said the funding was welcome news for councils, and would help them to support the most vulnerable members of our communities in times of emergency.
“We have strongly advocated for the ongoing funding of this vital program and are pleased the government is committed to improving the capacity of councils to plan for the emergency management needs of their communities.
“Unfortunately, we know the devastating effects that natural disasters can have on communities. This funding will give councils the opportunity to continue their positive work in ensuring they are thoroughly prepared for emergencies.”
MERP funding was introduced to help councils address the outcomes of the 2009 Victoria Bushfires Royal Commission. It is used to fund local emergency management staff and officers.
“The funding has also helped councils to engage in more strategic work, take on leadership roles, and improve the structure of emergency management within their council,” Cr McArthur said.
“We will work closely with Local Government Victoria to ensure the funding is allocated in a way that allows councils to work in partnership with other councils, emergency organisations and Victorian government agencies to facilitate joined-up planning, staff training, exercises and systems development.
“Councils are often the first place a community looks for support before, during and after emergencies, whether it’s a bushfire, flood or other natural disaster. The MERP funding will help to ensure they have the proper resources and staff in place to support communities through hard times.
“The program is currently undergoing an evaluation, and details of the new funding arrangements will be informed by outcomes of the evaluation.
“We look forward to the positive work councils will achieve with this funding, and we hope the program continues into the future to support the long-term welfare and resilience of communities affected by emergencies.”
