It’s taken 12 months of hard work but Fraser Coast Regional Council has welcomed the first graduates from its inaugural Leadership Discovery Program (LDP).
Sixteen staff members across Directorates ranging from Human Resources to Infrastructure and Environment completed the program, which aims to build on-the-job knowledge, enrich communication skills and develop a leadership blueprint to guide their day-to-day performance as leaders.
Graduate Lee-Anne Masnki, Senior Planner from Council’s Strategic Planning Department, said the program is strong evidence of Council’s commitment to empowering employees.
“It was a privilege to be involved in a program that covered a diverse range of topics in a highly professional manner,” Ms Manski said.
The LDP includes modules covering principles of management, leadership, team building, risk management and customer service concepts and practices.
These are combined with practical on-the-job including ‘job shadowing’ opportunities.
“I particularly enjoyed the ‘shadowing’ aspects of the course,” Ms Manski said.
“To be given a window into the workings of the Executive Group and Council and to see how the theory we were covering is put into practise was a great learning experience.”
“I would definitely recommend the LDP to future applicants.”
Following an overwhelming response to the initial program, FCRC Director of Organisational Services Alexis Hill said Council was now preparing to announce the participants for 2012/13.
“Council recognises the value of providing staff with opportunities for job enrichment and leadership development and it’s encouraging to see how much the graduates take away from this course,” Ms Hill said.
“As an organisation, it’s critical that Council’s hierarchy make more effective use of our most valuable resource, our people.”
