Celebrating local women

Local governments across the country are celebrating their inspirational local women in honour of today’s International Women’s Day.

The globally recognised event has been celebrated since the early-1900s and this year’s theme is ‘Pledge for Parity’.

Penrith City Council Mayor, Councillor Karen McKeown, said the City is hosting an event featuring inspirational speakers and performances.

“As a woman, and also as Mayor of the City, I know first-hand the challenges faced at home and at work every day,” Cr McKeown said.

“International Women’s Day is an opportunity for us all to acknowledge these challenges and celebrate the determination of women to make things happen for themselves, and for those around them.

“Both men and women can pledge to take steps toward achieving gender parity more quickly.

“Whether this is to help women and girls achieve their ambitions, call for gender-balanced leadership or respect and value difference, each of us can lead by example and take action to accelerate gender parity.”

To coincide with the day, Melton City Council has launched a poster series campaign that profiles local women and their passion for the Melton community.

The campaign will help to challenge the drivers of violence by promoting women’s independence, challenging gender stereotypes and strengthening positive and equal relationships in the community.

The ‘Melton Women Making it Happen’ posters will be seen around the community at Council facilities and community spaces as well as online through social media platforms.
