Brimbank City Council in Victoria has received $200,000 in funding towards a project helping young people who have been through the justice system.
Brimbank Chair of Administrators, John Watson, said the Brimbank Growing Healthy Communities project aims to support vulnerable community members.
“It is aimed at helping young people and women living in Sunshine and St Albans who have been through the justice system or who are identified to be at risk of offending.
“The project provides an opportunity to create a safer, healthier and empowered community in Brimbank.”
The project is to be delivered by the Jesuit Community College in partnership with Council.
“This is an innovative project that combines a focus on public health and crime prevention, referrals for the project will come primarily from the Department of Justice and Regulation and Victoria Police,” Mr Watson said.
The Brimbank Growing Healthy Communities project is expected to engage up to 240 people and run for two years based at the Westvale Community Centre in Kings Park and the Hunt Club Community Arts Centre in Deer Park.
The Jesuit Community College is an education, training and employment arm of Jesuit Social Services and will offer Certificate 1 (General Education for Adults) course in horticulture, food handling, hospitality and retail vocations.
The funding is part of the Victorian Government’s further commitment to the Community Crime Prevention program.
