Little wooden shops boost shopping strip

As part of Moonee Valley City Council’s Buy Local Moonee Valley campaign, wooden ‘little shops’ with rewards attached have been hidden along a local shopping strip.

The promotion encourages residents to discover the many shopping opportunities in the Union Road business precinct in Ascot Vale, while also getting them out and about and exploring their neighbourhood.

Moonee Valley City Council Chief Executive Officer Bryan Lancaster said the promotion was a fun and affordable way for locals to discover places that they may not regularly frequent.

“More than 100 hand-crafted ‘little shops’ were distributed from late October. “Once a ‘little shop’ is found and redeemed it is redistributed back out into the community for the next person to find.
“The rewards include special offers and discounts on coffee, magazines, massages, doggie treats and much more.”
The Union Road campaign is a trial as part of Council’s wider Buy Local Moonee Valley campaign that aims to remove barriers to shopping locally across the municipality.
The campaign will also include a range of other promotions and temporary artworks to cement Union Road’s status as a vibrant shopping destination.
Council aims to roll out the campaign across other business precincts in Moonee Valley to encourage people to buy locally.
“This is one of the innovative ways that Council is supporting and investing in the development of the local businesses that make Moonee Valley such a vibrant place to live,” Mr Lancaster said.
