Setting sails for leadership

Councillor Peter Flynn congratulates Young Endeavour Scholarship recipient Amy Garland.

Maranoa Regional Council has awarded the Young Endeavour Scheme Scholarship to Mitchell’s Amy Garland.

Amy, 16, who is currently in grade 12, will join the 44 metre square rigged tall ship the Young Endeavour on a ten day journey of a life time.

Councillor Peter Flynn, Portfolio Chair for Community Development said the panel for the Scholarship selected Amy as they believed she would greatly benefit from the experience.

“This year, as in previous years, all of the applicants were of a very high standard.

“As Amy feels she had not yet had an opportunity to propel her leadership skills further, we believe she will receive the greatest benefit from this Scholarship aboard the Young Endeavour.

“This life changing experience will provide 24 young people with opportunities to increase self awareness as well as develop further teamwork and leadership skills, and I am sure Amy will excel.”

Amy is travelling from Brisbane to Sydney in July and will be involved in all aspects of sailing, from climbing the mast, setting the sails, navigating, keeping watch to taking the helm and helping in the galley.

Guided by a professional Navy crew, the youth crew will be given command of the ship for 24 hours.

The scholarship, provided by Maranoa Regional Council, is valued at $3,500.

The Young Endeavour Youth Scheme is a non-for-profit organisation that conducts twenty 11-day voyages each year around the coastline of Australia in partnership with the Royal Navy.
