The Surf Coast Shire in Victoria has endorsed a plan to curb domestic violence in the area.
The plan, which Council endorsed in February, was in part developed by G21 (Geelong Region Alliance), which includes five councils from the region.
Surf Coast Shire Council Torquay Ward Councillor Rose Hodge said the plan sets out key actions and outlines critical partnerships with regional support services, organisations and community groups.
“A collaborative approach is needed to tackle this issue,” she said.
The plan outlines three stages of action the Shire will take on the issue: primary prevention, early intervention, and response.
“We were eager to endorse the plan because, as a Council, we want to set an example for the community when it comes to gender equity and respectful relationships,” said Cr Hodge.
“We also want to continue to play our role to stop men’s violence against women and children.”
The Shire has taken a lead on the issue over the last few years.
In 2013, it became the first Victorian local government to introduce a family violence policy and provide paid leave to support employees experiencing domestic violence.
“Council has also applied to become a White Ribbon accredited workplace, which recognises workplaces that are taking steps to stop violence against women,” Cr Hodge said.
