In June the City of South Perth held its inaugural Disability Employment Business Sundowner to help connect employers with people with a disability seeking work.
Fifteen exhibitors and representatives from Disability Employment Service (DES) providers, support service organisations, the education sector, government departments and local businesses attended the event, which was held at the South Perth Community Hall on Wednesday 14 June.
The aim of the event was to bring key stakeholders together to build relationships and assist those seeking work to gain employment opportunities.
The evening included presentations from guest speakers Ian Tsolakis, Group Disability Employment Manager at Crown Resorts and Sarah Wardle, Count Me In Ambassador for the Disability Services Commission.
Mr Tsolakis spoke about CROWNability, Crown Resorts disability employment program and discussed how businesses can create inclusive workplaces.
Ms Wardle reflected on her employment journey, providing insight into her personal experiences as a person with disability.
The event is just one of the strategic initiatives in the City’s Disability Access and Inclusion Plan (DAIP) 2017-2021 which aims to ensure that all members of the community have the same opportunities.
“The City of South Perth is committed to ensuring that the community is an accessible and inclusive one where all people with disability have the same opportunities as others to secure employment within our community.
“The City’s inaugural Disability Employment Business Sundowner was a unique initiative to bring together businesses, service and support providers, people with disability and their families to help educate and inform them about employment and inclusion in the workplace,” said City of South Perth Mayor Sue Doherty.
“The event provided valuable information and resources, with listening and learning opportunities for all who attended.”
The Disability Employment Business Sundowner was funded by the Lighthouse Project, a partnership between the Disability Services Commission and Local Governments Professionals Australia WA.
