City of Playford in South Australia has been recognised for its work cultivating a healthy community.
In November the City was named the Australian Winner in the ‘Councils with populations greater than 50,000’ category of the 2017 Heart Foundation Local Government Awards for its contribution to tackling heart disease.
The accolade follows on from City of Playford’s State win earlier in 2017, for its work on improving the health of its community.
Playford Mayor Glenn Docherty said it was a fantastic achievement to receive this accolade from such a reputable organisation.
“We are honoured to be recognised as Australia’s hardest working council to promote healthy eating and physical activity.
“We offer a number of initiatives including nutritious meal packs and free fitness and exercise classes. It’s part of our ongoing commitment to improve health and wellbeing in our community.”
Chief Executive Officer of Heart Foundation SA Ms Imelda Lynch congratulated the council.
“The commendation recognises the council’s great work across a range of council strategies, plans and policies which improve public and community health and education outcomes,” said Ms Lynch.
“The Awards recognise the outstanding achievements of local governments in the continuing fight against heart disease – the single biggest killer of Australian men and women,” added Ms Lynch.
The Council took home a cheque for $5000 for the award, which it will reinvest back in to community health programs.
