The City of Darwin today launched a state of the art solar system on the roof of Casuarina Library.
The 99.84 kilowatt system is made up of 416 modules each producing up to 240 watts.
The power generated will be used on site at the library and any additional power will be fed into Darwin’s grid.
Lord Mayor Katrina Fong Lim said she was pleased to see this initiative from Council’s Climate Change Action Plan come to life.
“City of Darwin is committed to taking actions towards an environmentally sustainable city, and this project, together with the Renewable Energy Facility at Shoal Bay make a meaningful contribution to reducing our carbon footprint.
“During its twenty year life, we expect to offset 2,588 tonnes of CO2, which is equivalent to planting 4,167 trees.”
The cost of the system will be neutralised after four years.
The real-time power output of the solar system at Casuarina Library can be viewed at a public display at the library on the City of Darwin website.
