The Australasian Waste and Recycling Expo (AWRE) and Meinhardt, the global multidisciplinary engineering and professional services consultancy, has put a call out to Councils who are leading the way in the waste sector to submit their ideas and initiatives for the AWRE Innovation Council Awards.
“When it comes to waste, Councils have realised they need to deliver smarter,” said David Corrigan, Associate Director – Environmental.
“It can be an emotive subject with constituents but when tackled well, whether it is from a strategic perspective, such as a new recycling initiative, or from a design perspective, such as the creation of new facilities, it can deliver significant community benefits.
“We are working with many Council clients who are keen to explore new ideas and technologies in this space.
“This is seeing significant economic, social and environmental benefits realised for their communities.
“These awards help celebrate these achievements and Meinhardt is delighted to support this initiative to help drive innovation across the industry.”
Last year’s Innovative Council Award winner was East Gippsland Shires – Mallacoota.
Their collaborative kitchen-to-compost project with the local community saw the removal of kitchen organics from the municipal waste stream by adding them to the kerbside green waste bin and having them composted on a local farm using Vital Resource Management’s Biologic compost accelerants.
So successful was the 18-month trial that the decision was made to establish a permanent organic waste-processing site.
“Innovation in waste and recycling can come from all levels of government, with local councils often being overlooked for their contribution to the immediate communities they serve, “ said Brett Judd, Group Exhibition Director, Diversified Communications.
“At AWRE we feel it is important to recognise Councils that have implemented truly innovative programs and highlight their achievements to the wider community.”
Councils have until Friday 29 August to submit their entries with the winners announced at the AWRE Cocktail Reception on Thursday 9 October in Sydney.
