Gaining workplace skills

Moree Plains Shire Council, New South Wales, is providing teenagers the chance to gain work skills and experience through paid employment.

Human Resources Officer, Jessica Johnstone, explained the teenagers are working as School-Based Trainees with Council while furthering their career opportunities through a nationally recognised Vocational Education and Training qualification in conjunction with their Higher School Certificate.

“Council offers a number of fantastic career opportunities for youth (and beyond!) with school-based traineeships and apprenticeships and we are currently guiding [current students] John and Jenica through their chosen qualifications and on the job training.

“Jenica Haines-Creighton is working at the Dhiiyaan Aboriginal Centre and studying a Certificate II in Business; while John Shelton is working in the Information Services section and studying a Certificate III in Information Digital Media and Technology.

Both students formally commenced their two year employment agreement at the beginning of 2018 and will complete their qualifications whilst attending school and completing 100 days in the workplace.

They join last year’s recruits Emily Cosgrove, who is located at Gwydir Daycare and Preschool and is completing a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care and Shauntahlee Wade who is in the Planning and Community Development Department completing a Certificate II in Business.
