City of Onkaparinga, South Australia, has given a $3.2 million streetscape upgrade to the historic township of Aldinga in Adelaide’s south, creating a connected, beautiful and inviting place for people to gather.
Aldinga township is an important historic centre situated in a rural setting and in close proximity to the spectacular Port Willunga coastline.
Old Coach Road is the heart of the township, lined with a mix of local and state heritage buildings, many of which have been repurposed as cafes, shops, businesses and community venues.
Characterised by a laid back charm and loads of potential, Aldinga – prior to the upgrade – was lacking in amenity and cohesion, and the street infrastructure was nearing the end of its asset life.
Director City Operations, Kirk Richardson, said Council worked closely with the community on the six year project.
“An extensive community and stakeholder engagement process was critical to ensure a design that responded to changing business and community needs.
“The community highlighted the importance of Aldinga as a unique township with a relaxed low-key, rural, historic and quirky character.
“Our project required coordination of significant infrastructure upgrades including a new mains sewer system, powerline undergrounding, significant stormwater improvements and road reconstruction.
“The streetscape improvements were designed in-house.”
The streetscape upgrade included increased spaces for outdoor dining and design features to slow vehicle traffic and prioritise pedestrian movement, including a shared street in the business hub.
The project also delivered new street trees planted in structural soil, a new green public space, new footpaths and shared-use paths, limestone walling, timber fencing and a trail of public art sculptures.
“The smaller precincts along Old Coach Road now link together which encourages visitors to stay and explore local businesses along the
entire street.”
