Small projects receive big boost

People of Darwin will receive the Dog Park they have asked for.

City of Darwin and the Northern Territory Government have announced the commencement of their $2 million Joint Small Projects, with the Lakeside Dog Park one of 14 projects to be completed before June 30, 2020.

The joint projects aim to improve amenity, accessibility and useability of public spaces across the municipality.

The Lakeside Dog Park, will see fully fenced play areas for large and small dogs, dog water troughs and play elements, dog disposal bags, along with shade trees and seating.

Lord Mayor, Kon Vatskalis said he was excited about the commencement of the project.

“City of Darwin Elected Members and Northern Territory Members of Parliament have worked closely for many months to identify and prioritise projects that will deliver great outcomes for our community.

“Pet ownership in Darwin is very high – we have more than 8,000 registered dogs in our city – so I expect the dog park to be very well utilised!

“The community have been lobbying for a Dog Park for some time and this facility will provide pet owners with a safe and attractive area to exercise their dogs.”

Providing a dog exercise park supports City of Darwin’s Great Pets Start with You campaign, which encourages responsible pet ownership.

Minister for Health and Member for Nightcliff, Natasha Fyles, said, “Dog parks are a great place for owners to socialise their dogs. The fully fenced Lakeside Dog Park will allow pet owners to give their dogs off leash time in a safe space.”

Member for Casuarina, Lauren Moss MLA, “Many local residents have much loved pets and will be pleased with the addition of a local dog park.

“I welcome Council’s continued consultation, and the shared commitment to make these grass roots projects a reality.

“In particular families in Tiwi will be thrilled with upgrades to a park in desperate need of an upgrade.”

Projects include new toilet facilities in Jingili, Rapid Creek and Cullen Bay, along with playground and park upgrades in Tiwi, Anula, Leanyer and Wanguri.

City of Darwin are managing and scoping all projects and local contractors are being engaged where necessary.
