Cyclists converge at Commuter Café

Council staff Randell Stott, Dami Barnes and Martin Olsen, prove riding to work in varied attire, is possible.

Encouraging the working commuters in Devonport, Tasmania, to get on their bikes and ride to work has proved popular, through to the local Commuter Café.

Every second Wednesday between 7-8.30am, cyclists can converge at Pinctada Kitchen in Devonport and enjoy a free breakfast to start their day, thanks to an initiative by the Devonport City Council.

Council’s Deputy General Manager, Jeffrey Griffith, said the Commuter Café not only encouraged people to get active, it also created a social avenue for participants to make new friends.

“Summer is a great time of year to get out and get active and Council is pleased to provide the Commuter Café as an incentive to cyclists.

“The interest so far has indicated that people are enjoying the alternative trek into work, with some people riding a fair distance from the outskirts of the Devonport central business district.

“Council also provides changeroom and shower facilities for cyclists to use before heading to work.”

The project was funded by the Healthy Tasmania Fund through the Tasmanian Government.
