Creek rerouted for park upgrade

Konjup Brook was diverted making the park and tourist/cultural precinct more accessible.

Shire of Kojonup, Western Australia, is upgrading the popular Kojonup Park using funds recently received through the Drought Community Program.

The project includes realigning the Kojonup Brook in order to improve the parking layout and safety of the Kojonup Park precinct car and caravan parking and turning area.

Located as it is on the corner of Albany Highway and Broomehill Road, Kojonup Park is a major asset to the town attracting both locals and passing travellers.

The park is adjacent to the Kodja Place Tourism and Cultural Precinct which houses voices, photographs, art and objects from Kojonup’s Noongar-Aboriginal and settler cultures.

The Arnold Potts Memorial is housed within the park precinct. Brigadier Potts was the commander of the Australian troops in Kokoda during World War Two and was local to Kojonup.

Council’s priority is to upgrade the car parking and provide better access for visitors to Kojonup Park and its facilities, which include an ablution block, playground, barbeque and picnic tables.

The works have required the realignment of the Kojonup Brook 20m to the north.

The shire excavated the new creek alignment to 3m wide, lining the floor with concrete and reinforcing the walls with locally sourced rock.

A new 100,000 litre tank was installed to supply water to reticulate the park and RV area located on the Albany Highway/Gordon Street junction.

These reticulation works will make the RV area a lot more user friendly and a lot more accommodating for visitors to Kojonup.
