To mark International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and White Ribbon Day, Banyule Council has hosted a ‘Walk a mile in her shoes’ event, which invited men to don women’s shoes and participate in a 1.6km walk against violence.
The community was invited to join the walk and help Council raise awareness of violence against women.
Women were also encouraged to show their support and join the walk.
Then Banyule Acting Mayor Cr Jenny Mulholland said violence against women was a serious issue that was far too prevalent in the community.
“We also know that the issue is largely under reported.”
In September this year, Banyule Council skinned one of its waste trucks with a message supporting White Ribbon Day: ‘Violence Against Women. Let’s get rid of it. Banyule supports the prevention of violence against women.’
Cr Mulholland said there were many health impacts from violence against women including anxiety, depression, brain injury, chronic disability, unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, self-harm and suicide.
The broader social and cultural impacts include financial debt, unemployment, family breakdown, homelessness and social isolation.
