Vale Mayor Barry Jarvis

The Local Government Association of Tasmania (LGAT) has released a statement following the news that LGAT President Mayor Barry Jarvis passed away yesterday.

Barry Jarvis was elected to Dorset Council in 2007 and became Mayor in 2009.

Mayor Jarvis had been a representative of the Association’s General Management Committee since 2011 and commenced his Presidency in October 2014.

The statement reads:

Having been involved in a small rural council that represents an area that has taken many economic hits over the last decade, Barry had become increasingly aware of the importance of councils in advocating and representing community.

Barry was enjoying the challenges of working with Association members, the State Government and other stakeholders to further progress Local Government in Tasmania.

As President, he worked collaboratively, engaging positively with the many varied stakeholders and advocating strongly for the best outcomes for the Local Government sector and local communities.

He was a well-liked and highly respected leader.

“Our thoughts are very much with his family, friends and colleagues at this sad time,” said Acting LGAT President, Mayor Daryl Quilliam.

“Just as we will miss his warm and supportive leadership at LGAT, I know the Dorset community will be acutely aware of his absence.”
