Agreement renewed with Cancer Council

Marrickville Council’s Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Cancer Council has been renewed.

The MoU with the Cancer Council of NSW is part of Council’s Community Partnership program, and facilitates important public health promotional activities and initiatives, including targeting tobacco use, sun protection, lifestyle issues, prevention and early detection, and community engagement.

Mayor of Marrickville Councillor Mark Gardiner said the MoU benefits every Marrickville resident.

“The Cancer Council is a highly effective organisation with very practical ideas to improve community health.

“It’s highly advantageous for Marrickville Council to work with the Cancer Council, use their ideas and resources to work towards making Marrickville healthier, and hopefully reduce cancer rates in our community.”

As part of the MoU, Council has held support-groups at Marrickville Library for people living with cancer.

Council’s Smoke-Free Outdoors Environments Policy was introduced in July 2011.

The Policy restricts smoking at sportsgrounds, aquatic and other recreation facilities, playgrounds, bus stops, and outdoor dining venues.

The NSW State Government legislation banning all smoking in food service areas, which commences in July, will support Council policy and assist in implementation and regulation.

As part of the new MoU with the Cancer Council, Council has agreed to engage and educate all stakeholders affected by the new outdoor dining laws, display sun-safe promotional material at the Fanny Durack Aquatic Centre in Petersham, distribute and display information at Council libraries on cancer information and support, and host a pink ribbon day fundraising event for the community.
