2013 National General Assembly ‘Foundations for the Future – Twenty 13’

This year’s National General Assembly (NGA) promises to be politically charged and of critical importance to local government, as the sector unites to plan initiatives for the betterment of our communities.

With the federal election announced for 14th September, the Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) anticipates key federal politicians accepting the invitation to address the NGA.

ALGA has invited the Prime Minster, the Hon. Julia Gillard, the Minister for Regional Australia, Regional Development and Local Government, the Hon. Simon Crean and the Leader of the Opposition, the Hon. Tony Abbott.

ALGA is pleased to have already received a number of acceptances and is pleased to confirm that the NGA will include addresses from the Leader of the Nationals, the Hon. Warren Truss, the Leader of the Greens, Senator Christine Milne and the Shadow Minister for Regional Development, Local Government and Water, Senator Barnaby Joyce.

Delegates at the NGA will have the opportunity to hear from these key politicians as they present their party platforms and local government policies. Delegates are also given the opportunity to directly engage with them.

Keynote speakers include well-respected columnist for The Sydney Morning Herald and Sun-Herald, Fox Sports presenter and former rugby player, Peter FitzSimons, who will address the National General Assembly on Wednesday 19th June, and the highly regarded ABC journalist and host, Geraldine Doogue, whose address will be an opportunity for the sector to hear Geraldine’s observations and insights into how best to prepare for the challenges of the future.
