You don’t need to travel far to discover Burwood’s rich historic past – a new heritage walk map developed by Council shows all the treasures available around the CBD.
The walk aims to celebrate the unique heritage of the Burwood area, capture the history of the town centre, the diverse cultural identity of its people and the changing character of the streetscape over the years.
In addition to looking at how progress has changed the way people live, shop, dine and drive around Burwood over the past 50 years, the historical walk looks at how the town centre has developed, the important role Burwood station has played in the growth of the suburb, and some of the past events that make up Burwood’s history. This includes the infamous murder of Mayor William Paisley by then town clerk William Redfearn in 1894 – probably one of the first political assassinations in Australia.
The self guided tour map will soon be available on Council’s website.
