Road works info online

Mackay Regional Council (MRC) is dedicated to keeping residents and motorists informed on road works occurring around the region, implementing an interactive online mapping system on their website.

MRC Deputy Mayor and Roads and Drainage portfolio holder, Councillor Kevin Casey said that Council wanted to simplify the dissemination of the significant amount of information on road works in the region.

“The mapping system, now live on council’s website, will allow residents to make informed decisions on alternative routes to limit the impact of road works on their trips,” Cr Casey said.

“This visual mapping was seen as the best way to communicate with the public on road works within the whole region,” he said.

“We believe this system will prove to be a very popular tool as it’s easy to use and provides information at a time and place that is convenient to the public.”
At this stage, the maps will be updated every fortnight so that all the information and works remain up to date.

Cr Casey said Council isn’t relying solely on the maps to engage with the community; rather, the system is seen as an opportunity to get more information out to a wider group of people.

“Council’s website sees a large amount of visitors each month for example in January alone we had over 55,000 people go online.”

The maps feature a wide range of information from major projects, short-term works, drainage and general works, such as footpaths and car parks, as well as road re-seals and roads that are prone to flood in the event of heavy rainfall.
