Chinese basketball stars train at Busselton’s GLC

The Chinese National Basketball team visited Busselton recently to participate in an intensive four day training camp at the Geographe Leisure Centre (GLC). The stars of Chinese basketball were preparing for the upcoming YouYi Games – a two day friendly series played in Western Australia and Singapore. A new series, the YouYi (“Friendship”) games is an initiative of former Australian basketball star, Andrew Vlahov.

Basketball is massively popular in China where it is estimated that more than 300 million people play the sport.

For the 12 strong Chinese team and their American coach, this series provided a great opportunity to hone their skills and gain match experience against top international talent in their bid to regain the Asian Championship which will be played in China in September 2011.

GLC Recreation Facilities Manager Garry Stokes was thrilled to host the Chinese National Team.

“We have excellent basketball facilities at the centre, and it’s great to see it being utilised by such a high profile team,” he said.

“The Busselton GLC is an excellent choice of training venue – it has everything a team of this calibre may require in a convenient, low stress environment.”
