Macedon Ranges equal access adventure playground*

Located an hour’s drive from Melbourne in Central Victoria, Macedon Ranges Shire recently completed the installation of an adventure playground for children of all abilities.

The completed project is the result of six determined mothers forming a committee to develop an innovative adventure playground with Access for All Abilities (AAA) features. The committee raised funds for over a year before concept designs were submitted to Council.

Initially the committee wanted a timber adventure playground. However, as Council would be responsible for the ongoing maintenance and it believed timber presented too many maintenance issues, it limited the designs to a steel based structure.

A tender was called in mid 2006, and Playspace Playgrounds was shortlisted as one of three suppliers.

The adventure playground committee then had a reasonably long consultation period, during which Playspace responded with additional concepts that literally ‘blew the committee away’!

The concepts included an impressive entrance to the play area with a working windmill, a cottage style homestead covering nine platforms and a bullnosed roof, along with many customised elements.

The designs highlighted what would be an extremely inclusive play space suitable for all abilities. It featured a large net climber, a four seat spinner known as the G Pod, four slides, numerous swings and an awesome rocker for family fun.

Once Playspace’s tender was approved, the project was delivered in just over three weeks.

The community’s response to the project was overwhelming. Promised donations were exceeded and the community finally had a playground worth celebrating.
