Moreland residents celebrated the completion of the new Glenroy Community Centre in 2006, with then Moreland Mayor, Councillor Anthony Helou, and State Treasurer and Member for Broadmeadows, John Brumby, officially opening the centre on 21 July.
The opening of the centre was the culmination of a collaborative development and planning process as part of Moreland City Council’s wider three part Linking Glenroy strategy.
The Linking Glenroy project aims to identify local priorities for the Glenroy community in general and to support young people in particular. Linking Glenroy began in 2004 when the State Government agreed to contribute $1.016 million from the Community Support Fund and $286,000 through the Department of Human Services for the community health services component of the Glenroy Community Centre. Council contributed $1.5 million to the new building.
Reflecting Council’s commitment to environmental sustainability, the Glenroy Community Centre incorporates environmentally sustainable design, including:
- use of recycled materials in the carpet, external play area, bricks and concrete
- BreatheEasy wall paint, improving air quality
- AAA fittings, pressure regulators and water tanks to avoid water wastage
- solar hot water installation and shading to reduce heat in summer
- energy efficient lighting, electrical equipmen and skylights.
The building of the Glenroy Community Centre demonstrates what community partnerships can achieve. The project involved project partners Glenroy Community Hall, Glenroy Neighbourhood Learning Centre, Glenroy Senior Citizens Centre, Moreland Community Health Service, Moreland City Council and the Victorian Government.
Incorporating the Glenroy Neighbourhood Learning Centre, an occasional child care centre, a Maternal and Child Health Centre and Moreland Community Health Service, the Glenroy Community Centre will improve access to services and programs in a safe, accessible and culturally relevant environment, provide free support services and recommendations, and develop new community programs for Moreland residents.
