Mediation grows in LG dispute resolution*

Mediation continues to be a growth area for Local Government, if full attendance at an Australian Commercial Disputes Centre (ACDC) Local Government Mediation Course earlier this year is any indication.

ACDC Training Manager, Steve Gibbeson, said that the benefits of mediation are being recognised by Local Government.

“Workable agreements are more likely when parties feel they have had their say, are considered and have contributed to a proposal,” he said.

“The needs of the parties are being met and this makes it easier for the Council to approve, knowing that the previously opposed individuals or communities have collaboratively agreed on aspects of potentially contentious applications and issues.”

ACDC will be holding another Local Government Mediation Course from 11-14 July in Sydney. “By combining theory and practice with relevant examples and role plays, the course takes mediation and puts it in a specific Local Government context,” Steve Gibbeson said. “The March course had a great mix of people, such as Councillors and those in planning, development and environment positions.”

Please contact ACDC to find out how to gain direct feedback from past participants. Participants who complete the course become eligible to attempt ACDC Mediation Accreditation.

ACDC is a not for profit organisation founded in 1986. It has access to the most experienced dispute resolution professionals in the country, and has an ACDC Accreditation System that is highly regarded in the Alternative Dispute Resolution field.
