Stretching for a good cause

Ballarat residents stretched, smiled and snuggled their way through a unique Kitten Yoga event that combined relaxation with a heartwarming cause – helping kittens find their forever homes.

Hosted by Eastside Yoga and supported by the Ballarat Animal Shelter, the beginner-friendly 45-minute yoga flow was held in the company of 20 playful kittens, all available for adoption. The event also raised funds for the shelter’s ongoing work.

City of Ballarat Mayor Cr Tracey Hargreaves said the event was a creative way to connect the community with pets in need and reflects the goals of the recently adopted Domestic Animal Management Plan 2026–2029.

“Kitten Yoga is a fun, meaningful way to bring joy to residents while helping ensure every kitten has the chance to grow up in a caring home,” Cr Hargreaves said.

“It’s exactly the kind of innovative initiative we’re committed to under our Domestic Animal Management Plan.”

Following the class, kittens were available for adoption from the Ballarat Animal Shelter. Each adoption included vaccination, worming, microchipping, and desexing.

The event, held on Saturday 17 January, sold out quickly, with $150 raised to support the shelter’s work to improve animal welfare and strengthen community engagement.

This is the first in a range of new initiatives that the Ballarat Animal Shelter will be introducing to increase education, awareness and adoption for animals.
