Sod turned on major upgrade at Paul Fitzsimons Oval

Work has officially begun on the redevelopment of Paul Fitzsimons Oval with Alice Springs Town Council and the Australian Government turning the first sod this morning.

Mayor Asta Hill and Alice Springs Town Council CEO Andrew Wilsmore were joined by Member for Lingiari Marion Scrymgour to officialy break ground on the project, beginning works on the $5 million project.

The upgrade includes:

• A new modern clubhouse with change rooms, canteen, storage and multipurpose

community space

• Installation of new training light towers to improve safety, energy efficiency and evening use

• Redeveloped car parking and improved pedestrian access

• New spectator seating and shade structures

• Flexible spaces designed to support wider community programs and events

The project was originally championed by Federal Sporting Club, which sought funding support and played a key role in bringing the vision for an upgraded facility to life.

Council acknowledges the Club’s advocacy and commitment to improving local sporting infrastructure.

All works will align with sporting code requirements, accessibility standards and building compliance, ensuring the facility is safe and inclusive.

Paul Fitzsimons Oval commemorates Paul “Fizzer” Fitzsimons, a former educator, ABC sports broadcaster and much loved figure in the Northern Territory. The oval was renamed in 2017 to honour Paul’s unique contribution to his beloved community.

Construction is now underway with local company MPH Projects.

Alice Springs Mayor Asta Hill said

“Sport is deeply embedded in life in Alice Springs. Our clubs are where young people build confidence, volunteers selflessly dedicate their time, and families come together week after week,” the mayor said.

“This project is about making sure our facilities keep pace with the needs of our growing and passionate sporting community.

“We sincerely thank the Australian Government for their investment in Alice Springs and Federal Sporting Club for their advocacy. This project recognises the importance of grassroots sport in regional Australia and supports infrastructure that strengthens community wellbeing.”
