Park celebrates local diversity

Visitors to Osborne Park in Wollongong have more than open space and ocean views to enjoy following the opening of the Storylines art and community project. Celebrating the Indigenous and European histories of the site, Osborne Park Storylines project is the result of partnership grants from Royal Australian Historical Society, NSW Ministry for the Arts, Australia Council – Community, Art, Environment and Design, Living Centres – Department of Urban Affairs and Planning, as well as Wollongong City Council.

Lord Mayor, Councillor Alex Darling, said this collaborative project has spanned six years of research and community consultation.

It includes recording of oral histories from 11 older members of the local community, employment of eight artists and the efforts of five divisions of Council.

“Osborne Park Storylines has been inspired by the remains of the tramway bridge in the park and an Aboriginal midden located nearby,” the Lord Mayor said.  “The artworks tell the stories of the local Indigenous culture, history and the development of Wollongong’s coal industry.

“Thanks must go to the many community members, funding partners, artists and Council staff who have contributed their knowledge, ideas and hard work which ensured that this project has become a reality.  The rich culture of our past will be on display for future generations to enjoy in a beautiful coastal setting.”
