Message from the Mayor

The Local Government Act (1989) says “…it is the role of the Council to provide governance and leadership for the local community through advocacy, decision making and action.” Underneath this simple statement are all the complexities, conflicting needs, budget constraints and aspirations that make up the work of any local Council and familiar to all readers of Local Government FOCUS. I hope this supplement helps us to make connections right across Australia with Local Governments who are keen to improve their community life.

Darebin’s particular approach to governance underpins the processes described in these pages, as it underpins our everyday decision making and action. Our philosophy is that from boardroom to backyard, every resident can have a say in the way our City is managed. Public participation is at the heart of all our projects and policies.

As the level of government closest to the people, we believe it is vital Local Government is consistently open, fair and equitable. We believe in leading and advocating in the interests of our community. We aim to build partnerships with residents, groups, businesses and agencies in our community, as we believe these relationships to be critical to good governance.

After each election, we produce a new four year plan with our community, stating our objectives, strategies and performance indicators. We are committed to sound strategic planning, prudent financial management and responsible environmental behaviour.

If you want to find out more about our approach to governance, see our Council Plan 2005-2009 and the statement Governing Darebin on our website, or contact Rhys Thomas on (03) 9230 8443.
