Engineer training enhances Melbourne as employer of choice

Engineers at the City of Melbourne can now work to become chartered engineers by undertaking a new training program. Lord Mayor John So said Council had signed an agreement with the engineering industry’s peak professional association to allow employees to complete Engineers Australia’s Professional Development Program.

“Staff members will be able to study while still working in order to earn the highly regarded qualification of chartered engineer,” he said. “This initiative shows the City of Melbourne is committed to maintaining its reputation among job seekers as an employer of choice.

“Our employees are valuable to us and we are happy to help them to add to their professional qualifications. Employees who undertake this professional development program will join other engineers on staff who are already chartered.”

Deputy Lord Mayor and Deputy Chair of the Finance and Corporate Performance Committee, Councillor Gary Singer, said the agreement put the City of Melbourne on a par with larger, non government employers.

“This incentive will also be tempting for prospective City of Melbourne employees who are interested in fulfilling their career potential,” Councillor Singer said. “A chartered engineer is an engineer who has reached the highest standards of professionalism and has up to date knowledge, expertise, quality and safety. Among other things, a chartered engineer is also committed to keeping up to date with industry developments.”
