An Inclusive Leisure Centre Project involving the Cities of Banyule and Whittlesea and the Shire of Nillumbik, through the Access For All Abilities (AAA) Program commenced in 1998. The aim of the program is to develop and support sport and recreation environments that are inclusive of, and accessible to, people with disabilities.
As part of this program, the Banyule Inclusive Leisure Centre Project is a collaborative initiative between Banyule Leisure Facility Management, Leisure Action and Banyule City Council. Leisure Action (a service of the Spastic Society of Victoria) was approached to be involved.
This project concentrated on the following areas.
Training and Resources
Disability awareness training sessions were conducted, as well as other training to meet specific needs.
Customer Service
A Customer Service policy was developed from the training sessions and has since been implemented at the Leisure Centres.
Program Development
‘Come n Try’ days and pilot opportunities in swimming, yoga and SWEAT, a water based exercise program for people with disabilities, were developed.
Policy Development
This has ensured that access and equity is maintained at all times, targeting areas such as pricing structures, level of support and one registration form that suits people with varying levels of ability.
Marketing and Promotion
Promoting opportunities within the Leisure Centres for people with disabilities to the recreation, disability and community sector.
The outcomes of the project have included the leisure centres adopting a welcoming attitude, trained staff and inclusive programs. The centres have experienced increased patronage, which has enhanced their profile in the community.
At the same time, people with disabilities have experienced an opportunity to increase their participation in the community, develop relationships and friendships, increase fitness, flexibility and improve self esteem.
