‘How to’ for Agenda 21

The Local Government Environment Network is embarking on an exciting new project to facilitate the adoption of sustainability at the local level.

As many Local Governments around Australia grapple with the ‘how’ of Local Agenda 21, Environs Australia (formerly the Municipal Conservation Association) is set to launch a national training program and free information exchange service. This will assist Councils to plan and manage a sustainability program for their local area.

Designed for Local Government officers, managers, councillors and community groups working in environmental management, the two day training seminar offers key tools and practical concepts for the immediate planning of a sustainable development system. Presented in four workshop style modules in 10 locations across Australia, the two day seminar develops the distinct concepts of Agenda 21; its global focus; integrative principles; and a solid basis for community participation.

British academic and environmentalist, Stella Whittaker, will be taking part in the training seminar with other professionals experienced in the development and implementation of Agenda 21 programs. A senior lecturer in Urban Policy at the University of Lancashire, Ms Whittaker is an environmental scientist with 17 years experience working with local authorities and sustainability issues.

A national toll free 1800 number to access information on sustainability and Local Agenda 21 will be launched at the end of June.
