Walking for a healthier lifestyle

When the City of Hindmarsh Woodville in Adelaide decided to produce a walking brochure, it consulted those who know the area best – its residents. Council believed a competition would be the most effective method of encouraging residents to share their favourite walks so the ‘Winning Walkers’ competition was launched early this year.

Each entry was walked by at least two Council staff members and judged for its safety, access, scenic views and points of interest. Four walks were then selected for the brochure, titled ‘All in a Day’s Walk’. The four walks are varied to ensure all residents are able to choose a walk that suits their lifestyle.

‘By Sea and Lake’ is an eight kilometre walk that includes some beautiful foreshore and the award-winning West Lakes development. ‘The Duckpond’ is a short 30 minute stroll around a picturesque pond that is also suitable for wheelchairs and pushers.

‘Thomas’ Playground Tour’ as the name suggests, pays a visit to three playgrounds and follows a railway line allowing children to wave to the trains. ‘Linear Park’ is a walk along Adelaide’s famous River Torrens. With a number of bridges and pathways, it attracts people from all over Adelaide.

Rounding out the walking brochure are two historic walks. With a rich history dating back to Adelaide’s settlement in 1836, the City of Hindmarsh Woodville contains hundreds of interesting sites that capture the spirit of an era Council believes should not be forgotten.

“Our City has some fantastic areas which are a must to be included in any walking brochure,” said Mayor John Dyer. Having recovered from a heart-bypass operation in 1995, Mayor Dyer cannot emphasise enough the importance of walking regularly.
