While smoke alarms are mandatory in most new houses around Australia, it is older housing stock, with ageing electrical wiring and greater use of flammable materials, most vulnerable to fire.
Working with Lithgow Rotary clubs, Council has embarked on one of the most comprehensive fire prevention schemes in the country. It involves sponsoring the installation of smoke alarms for every house in the area. To date, 50 percent of homes have had alarms installed while the remaining 50 percent should be covered by smoke detectors by the end of this year.
Installation of the first smoke alarm in each home is free to all residents. Additional alarms are installed for a fee. Averting the risk of tragedy and property damage as a result of fire, makes this scheme highly commendable.
