Bringing the young back safely

Following the success of the Come Back Safely Campaign conducted under the auspices of RoadWise, Western Australia’s Local Government Road Safety Strategy, a new strategy is being implemented, specifically targeting young people.

Titled ‘Media Messages’, this campaign aims to address issues young people believed were not covered in the initial campaign. Tracey Nulty, RoadWise’s Project Officer, said that feedback from students indicated that they felt their age group and attitudes were not represented in Traffic Board road safety advertisements.

The Media Messages competition invites students from years nine and eleven in country schools to produce road safety advertisements aimed at their own peer group. Students from country regions will be invited to submit print, radio or television advertisements covering local safety issues which relate to young people.

In each region, winning local entries will be broadcast or printed by local media outlets who are assisting with sponsorship of the campaign. Grand Final winners will be announced during Western Australia’s Local Government Week in August.

Similar to other areas in Australia, the 17 to 24 year old age group is over represented in crash statistics in Western Australia. It is hoped that by targeting pre drivers and probationary drivers to produce advertising relevant to their peer group, the message of major risk factors, such as speed, alcohol, fatigue and inexperience, will be relayed to this vulnerable group.
