World class living in Melbourne’s west

Situated on the western fringe of metropolitan Melbourne, Melton just 30 years ago was a country township on the Western Highway passed through by travellers as they made their way to Ballarat or beyond to Adelaide. Today it is a thriving urban area offering its 44,000 residents a unique lifestyle that combines the best of both rural and city living.

Within its boundaries, the Shire has historic trails, grazing and farming, first class sporting facilities and conservation areas of unique bushland, alongside convenient, modern homes. All this is within a 35 minute drive of Melbourne’s CBD as well as ready access to regional centres such a Geelong and Ballarat.

With a predominantly young population, the focus is on creating a sustainable, enjoyable lifestyle based on well managed growth.

“This Shire has something to offer everyone,” said Adrian Pennell, Chief Executive Officer. “A world class lifestyle, 35 minutes from everywhere creates the basis for a prosperous, forward looking community.”

Melton Shire was the first to have an indoor wave pool in Australia. The Shire, working closely with the community, is endeavouring to bring development and employment opportunities to Melton while preserving and enhancing features that contribute to its ‘world class lifestyle’.

Following the Victorian wide restructure of Local Government in 1994, Council identified three key areas to focus the Shire’s resources for improving the area’s lifestyle and prospects. These include expanding local shopping to avert the drain of spending to other areas, improving the local environment which has been degraded through weed and pest infestation and developing new employment opportunities.

Council has been systematically promoting the region’s advantages both within Victoria and overseas.

A program to attract new business opportunities includes expanding existing markets in the thoroughbred industry, promoting the ideal business location Melton offers – close to Melbourne and Geelong – Victoria’s major industrial centres, shipping ports and international air transport, as well as emphasising the attractive lifestyle the district provides.

Rural schemes have increased agricultural production and new agribusiness, such as viticulture, are being established. In March, work will start on an expanded regional shopping centre. Melton Shire is also investing in a unique mixed use project to bring industry and diversity to the Shire.

Improved tourist facilities are attracting more visitors and interest in the area. While this development is taking place, the Shire continues to offer a high level of services to residents, providing a secure and harmonious community.
