Parramatta’s OZ Day a winner

An outstanding program of events held to celebrate Australia Day earlier this year, has resulted in a High Commendation in the Local Government Australia Day Awards for Parramatta City Council.

“This is a great reward and official recognition of the outstanding program provided by Council to celebrate our national day,” said Syd Thomas, Events Organiser for Parramatta.

Held at historic Parramatta Park, the program provided by Council included a range of activities for all age groups. Events started at 6 am with a free breakfast for the first 2,000 people to arrive at the park. Activities took place throughout the day culminating in the evening with a concert and fireworks display.

Classic Australian culture was represented in events throughout the day. These included sheep dog trials, a Bushman’s show, emu egg carving and a display of old Holden cars. Many events were provided free of charge or at reduced rates. This enabled as many people as possible to enjoy the program.

Australia’s rich history was on display, ranging from indigenous culture through to displays of old farming and industrial techniques, as well as a citizenship ceremony to welcome newcomers. Visitors to the Park were able to enjoy free rides, tours of the area’s many historic buildings and enjoy exhibitions ranging from the Defence Forces to horse shoeing and Aboriginal mural painting. For children, no doubt, the appearance in concert of Australian cultural icons ‘The Wiggles’ completed the day.
