Faith leaders work together

Moreland’s culturally rich community includes devout members of many religions. Their presence provides a supportive focal point for people from many different ethnic backgrounds.

In Moreland there are regular faith leaders gatherings. These gatherings allow members of different religions to meet and hear about other beliefs in a relaxed and informal setting.

Not only do the meetings serve to bring about better communication between the various religions, they also allow the church representatives, as community leaders, to discuss the various issues and problems which their communities face, many of which they share in common.

Their combined wisdom and influence in the community can bring understanding and ideas to combat a wide range of problems. It also allows them greater influence, when they seek consultation as a group rather than as isolated organisations.

Councillor Stella Kariofyllidis said these gatherings are wonderful for promoting community relations.

“They help to minimise divisions which might arise in the community and bring wisdom and consideration to social problems which confront everyone,” she said.

Some of the broader issues tackled during these meetings include matters which not only affect their communities directly but some which are based on a broad appreciation of the importance of human rights. These include Aboriginal reconciliation, gambling, youth unemployment and sanctuary for political refugees.
