Promoting best practice

The Department of Housing and Local Government at Katherine has recently prepared a home video of several communities in the Katherine region. The video covers practices in relation to alternative housing construction and illustrates best practice by Aboriginal people.

The video has been shown to neighbouring communities resulting in dialogue between community representatives. Subsequently, new approaches to old enterprise are being shared. It is anticipated this approach can be extended to other areas of Local Government activity, including core services of road maintenance, waste management and community leadership.

A pilot program producing quality videos of short duration with ‘voice overs’ in Aboriginal language, as well as statements and explanations by Aboriginal Elders, will commence shortly. Follow up visits between community members to promote acceptance of these best practice examples will be encouraged and supported by the Department of Housing and Local Government.
